The WS-2902 measures temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, wind speed & direction, rainfall, UV index, and solar radiation. Data is transmitted wirelessly to a console that uploads readings every 30 seconds via the Ambient Weather API.
Why This Station Exists
Northeast Montana is weather-sparse. The nearest official ASOS stations are in Wolf Point (38 miles) and Sidney (35 miles). The nearest NEXRAD radar — KGGW in Glasgow — is 60 miles west, and at that distance the lowest beam scans well above the surface.
Culbertson sits at the confluence of the Missouri and Big Muddy Creek, a geography that produces localized weather events — microbursts, fog banks, wind shear — that never show up on distant radar or regional forecasts.
For ranchers checking on livestock, farmers making planting decisions, and truck drivers navigating Highway 2, hyperlocal data matters. CWN fills a gap that the official monitoring infrastructure leaves open.
About the Operator
Montana Storm Network is operated by Cody Cosmano, a photographer based in Culbertson, MT. The intersection of weather and photography is what started this project — storm structure, prairie light, aurora over the Missouri Breaks.
What began as a way to know when to grab a camera turned into a community resource. The station provides data that neighbors, emergency services, and regional weather spotters can rely on when the nearest official reading is 35+ miles away.
Coverage Area
Station CWN-MT-001 provides ground-truth weather data for the Culbertson area of Roosevelt County. While sensor readings are point measurements, conditions are generally representative of the surrounding prairie within a 5–10 mile radius.
